The Best Time of Year to Propose in Australia

Last updated on March 09, 2023

Let's be honest. When you're in love, any time of year is the perfect time to propose, especially in a country as beautiful as Australia. And although there is no wrong or right way to propose, moments like these are the most memorable. Planning when and how you will propose will make the nail-biting question flow a little easier.

The wide variety of landscapes and climates that occupy Australia set the scene for the most romantic proposals. There is something for everyone, with tropical rainforests, deserts and mountain ranges, to name a few. But when exactly should you propose? Let's have a look.

Winter in Cradle Mountain, Tasmania

June Through August

Tasmania is breathtaking at any time of the year, but when winter arrives, it brings an enchantment of its own. The air is crisp, with falling snow dusting the eucalyptus-covered mountains. It's as perfect as it is picturesque, making winter an ideal time to propose in Cradle Mountain, Tasmania.

If love is in the air, you might even be lucky enough to catch the southern lights of the Aurora Australis. It doesn't get more romantic than a proposal under the flickering shades of the green, blue, purple and red night sky. So if it's a winter wonderland you're after, head over to the still waters of Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. Its flat, mirrored lakes make for the perfect backdrop.

From a written proposal in the snow, outlined by the soft iridescent light of candles, to a romantic whisper in front of a cosy open fire celebrated with Tasmania's finest apple cider, Cradle Mountain is the perfect alpine fairy tale in your Australian backyard.

If visiting Cradle Mountain for a snow-capped proposal is your destination of choice, then the best time to propose in Australia is June through August.

Sunrise at Uluru, Northern Territory

May Through September

Taking the time to pause and reflect at sunrise is always special. It grabs your senses and brings you into the moment. Now imagine that moment as you rise before the sun and propose just as the day breaks over Uluru's rock formation. It's as breathtaking as it is memorable, with the changing colours creating a memory that belongs entirely to you and your significant other.

Amongst the vast desert landscape is the Talinguru Nyakunytjaku viewing area for Uluru. It is the main sunrise viewing area. This is because the sun's rays shine directly on the rock formation at that particular time of day, reflecting the most striking changes of colour––and ultimately, the perfect spot to propose.

If visiting Uluru at Sunrise is your destination, the best time to propose in Australia is May through September.

NYE on Sydney Harbour, New South Wales

December 31st

If you're looking for an explosive proposal, then the New Year's Eve fireworks on Sydney Harbour are where it's at. Of course, you'll have to locate the ultimate vantage point, but when it comes to the surroundings of Sydney Harbour, there are a plethora on offer.

There is the option to rent a hotel room or book a restaurant with a large window or balcony where you can take in the spectacular views and create the perfect proposal. Or it could be as simple as grabbing a spot under the Harbour Bridge (amongst the revellers) and secretly popping the ring into a glass of champagne. Just make sure you propose before they drink it!

The Great Barrier Reef, Queensland

May Through October

One of the most popular proposal locations within Australia is amongst the crystal waters of the Great Barrier Reef. Whether on a white sandy beach, or underwater amidst the tropical fish and lively coral, the unparalleled beauty of the reef is why many take their love to ask them the ultimate question.

Need inspiration? Take a look at this young Australian couple, Lawrence Tufnel, 29, who proposed to his fiancé Jasmine Robertson, 25, 3.5 metres underwater in the Great Barrier Reef. And although it was romantic, if there were ever a time that he needed to take out a comprehensive standalone jewellery insurance policy to protect her precious engagement ring, this would be it.

A Tale As Old As Time

No matter the time, date or season. There are still treasured and traditional dates available on which to propose. Valentine's Day is one of them and although some may say it's cliche, proposing on Valentine's Day is as much a time-honoured tradition as dropping to one knee. It is, after all, one of the most romantic days of the year.

Perhaps it’s their birthday, Christmas or even the anniversary of the day you met. If a public display of affection is not quite your vibe, have a read of our Should You Propose in Public or Private? Whatever day you choose, enjoy it for the moment that it is, yours.

When the time is right, and the proposal is all said and done, JewelCover is here to provide you with a comprehensive standalone jewellery insurance policy to help you protect your precious engagement ring.
